HSCC  Mallory Park

9th August 2009

The Historic Sports car club returned to Mallory park on the 9th August, but unfortunately the meeting did not run as smoothly as planned.

Good entries for most of the 9 race program saw a variety of cars competing, but things got off to a bad start in the first race for Historic Saloons, when
Tim Brook in his Mini Cooper crashed out on lap 3. He demolished one of the posts securing the crash barrier and there was a delay of  around 30 minutes while the
barrier was re-assembled. The next race for Historic Formula Fords proved to be even worse. On the first lap, a collision between Westie Mitchell and Amanda Whitaker
caused Mitchell to spin, collecting Diogo Ferrao on his way to the tyre wall on the outside of Gerrards. Whitaker was able to continue but the other two had hit the barrier
fairly heavily, bringing out the Red flag. Unfortunately Whitaker's nosecone had been bent up and she did not see the red flag, and collided on the start straight with the Lola of
David Wild, which launched her high in the air as the car rolled end to end. She got out of the car in shock. Meanwhile, the other two drivers involved in the accident at Gerrrds
had to be removed from their cars. Mitchell had to be cut from his Merlyn. Eventually Mitchell and Whitaker were both taken to Leicetser Royal Infirmary where they were
both kept in overnight. Whitaker suffered heavy brusing while Mitchell suffered fractures to his arm and a damaged vertebrae. This delayed the meeting for nearly an hour and a half.

These delays meant that the remaining races were shortened. The Historic Formula Juniors then added to the misery when Justin Fleming hit the rear of another car at the exit to
Gerrards and launched his Elva 100 high in the air before crashing down and out of the race, causing yet another red flag.

After these delays the Guards Trophy which was due to run for 40 minutes was scrapped completely.
