The Cosford airshow 2009

A crowd of over 58000 people attended the 2009 Cosford Airshow at RAF Cosford. Near perfect conditions of bright sunshine, high white fluffy clouds and a gentle breeze made the perfect backdrop of a fantastic air display. The Red Arrows gave their normal perfect performance, wowing the crowd with their near passes, their spectacular formations and dynamic bursts. At one point they even drew a perfect heart with their smoke trails.

Star of the show for most people came near the end of the display, when the last remaining flying Vulcan bomber flew in to give after a million pound re-fit over the last few years. Its distinctive delta wing shape was visible from miles away, and the noise and power from its engines had to be seen and heard to be believed. The Battle of Britain memorial flight of a Spitfire, Hurricane and a Lancaster bomber had also flown in to remind us of the debt we owe to the RAF from the second World war. Modern aircraft were represented by a Eurofighter Typhoon, who impressed with the speed and agility of the fly by wire fighter. The Royal Navy gave a display of backward flying with their Lynx holicopters, while the Army displayed their new Apache gunship helicopter, and one of their Lynx helicopters which demonstrated a back flip, which most helicopters cannot perform.
